Music style: Soft pop infused jazz, with folk and electronic elements
Background: With an artistry so signature it seems a natural extension of being, in 2020 RIO released her first single “Wash Away” into a music scene that was positively monochrome prior to its arrival. In seamless continuation of her debut brush strokes, in 2021 she independently published her first EP The Young Lover, which soon gained rapid acclaim as the original soundtrack for the drama Nevertheless (알고있지만). With stunning cinematography and watercolour storytelling, the drama effectively doubles as a breathtaking ten-hour long music video for RIO’s iridescent first EP.
Traits: RIO’s mastery in lyrics, composition, arrangement, and production imbues each of her songs with a touch so personal that simply listening feels like a tête-à-tête with the artist herself. A singular amalgamation of genres, stitched through with audio clips from iconic films, exquisite vocal harmonies, and intricate instrumental interludes - once you’ve gone RIO, there’s no going back.
